The Killam Fellowships Program, administered by Fulbright Canada, provides an opportunity for exceptional undergraduate students from the United States to spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in Canada.
The Killam Fellowships Program offers a cash award of $5,000 US per semester($10,000 for the full year), along with an allowance of CN$500 to offset health insurance costs. The Foundation hosts all new Killam Fellows at an Orientation program in Ottawa each fall and again at a seminar in Washington D.C. each spring. In addition, all Fellows are eligible to apply for a mobility grant. The idea of the mobility initiative is to allow students to undertake an educational field trip, providing the Fellows with the opportunity to gain a broader understanding of the culture of the host country.
You can choose to attend in the Fall semester, the Spring semester, or both (i.e., a full academic year's study). It is important to note that you will be applying at least a year in advance!
You may choose from more than 15 universities in Canada. Final enrollment is subject to the approval of the Killam Fellowship committee and the Canadian university.

Each September, with the support of the United States Department of State, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, and the American Killam Trusts, the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America hosts the incoming cohort of American Fulbright Scholars and the entire incoming class of Killam Fellows. Orientation, which is designed to provide an introduction to Canada and an opportunity to meet with management and staff at the Foundation, is critical to the overall exchange experience. The Foundation covers all reasonable costs associated with the orientation.
The Killam Fellowships Spring Seminar is a series of academic and cultural events which is offered to all Killam Fellows each April. The seminar takes place in Washington, D.C., allowing the Killam Fellows to experience the best of both national capitals. The Killam Fellowships Spring Seminar offers the opportunity to meet with senior representatives from the Canadian Embassy in Washington, the US Government, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. The seminar also provides the opportunity to visit major landmarks in Washington. Previous participants have visited Capitol Hill, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Newseum, the OAS, the Museum of the American Indian, and the White House. The Foundation covers all reasonable costs associated with the Spring Seminar.
Award: Cash award of US$5000 per semester, health insurance allowance of CN$500, an all-expenses-paid three-day orientation in Ottawa, and a three-day all-expenses-paid seminar in Washington. All Killam Fellows are also eligible to apply for a grant of up to CN$800 for travel within Canada.
Eligibility: Applicants must be US citizens, full-time undergraduate students in good standing. You must be fluent in English, or in French where appropriate.
Enrollment and Costs: Students will pay Vanderbilt tuition, receive Vanderbilt financial aid, and will remain officially enrolled at Vanderbilt during the course of their semester or year in Canada.
Application: The Killam application process is a nomination process for their direct exchange program: Vanderbilt must nominate your application and send it on to Killam. To apply, click on the Apply Now button above. Note that applications are made available by Killam in September, so you will not be able to apply until then. Do not apply directly to Killam's Open Competition, as Vanderbilt will be unable to support your application.
